Rhodium is a precious metal that is in the family of platinum. Plating involves coating the jewelry with a surface that guards against scratches and also gives a reflective white appearance. It is most commonly found on white gold jewelry but can also be used on silver and other materials. Rhodium plating can also be referred to as rhodium dip. We Rhodium all of our jewelry repairs before completion and offer free dips to any wedding or engagement ring purchased in our store. The rhodium coating will wear away over time and needs to be refinished periodically. If you have a nickel allergy, rhodium plating might be a good option for your jewelry as it is nickel free.
Your ring should fit your finger comfortably-snug enough so that it will not fall off, but loose enough to slide over your knuckle. Finger size changes depending on the time of day and the weather. If your ring is too tight, Windex is the perfect solution to help slide the ring off without leaving a residue on your stones and settings. If your ring needs to be adjusted there are a few ways a jeweler can resize your ring:
- Stretching: With this method, a jeweler will heat the ring to soften the gold and slowly stretch the metal, making it thinner. The slightest mistake can damage your precious ring so this method is suited best to bands with no stones.
- Cutting & soldering: A cut is made and metal is either added or removed to adjust the size to fit. Sizing should be done at the center of the shank bottom, unless there are quality marks or an inscription that precludes it. No seams should be visible when finished.
- Sizing assistants: placed on the inside of the bottom of the shank, these assistants help keep your ring from twisting on your finger. These can also help with arthritic joints that are larger than usual requiring a bigger size ring, but create a problem of the setting sliding to the underside.
Pricing for Ring Sizing using the cut and solder method varies depending on the metal quality, color, amount of stones, thickness and the difference in size. Below is a chart with estimated prices for 14KT gold.

One of the most common types of jewelry repair is prong repair and re-tipping. Over time, constant wear can cause your prongs to wear down and increase the potential for losing a precious gemstone or diamond. Something as simple as exposure to bed sheets or gardening can affect prong strength. Depending on the severity of the prong wear, they will be replaced, re-tipped by adding a metal to the top of the prong, or replaced entirely. One of the first signs that something is wrong with your prongs is when your ring starts snagging your clothes and other things. If you notice such a problem, don’t put off bringing your jewelry in for an inspection.
